Route 66 section trips: what to expect
Not everyone has two weeks. Our section trips cut the road into five pieces that each make sense on their own: Chicago to the Ozarks, the Kansas corner and Oklahoma to Amarillo, New Mexico from Tucumcari to Gallup, Arizona from the Painted Desert to Oatman with a night at the Grand Canyon, and the Mojave to Santa Monica.
Each section starts and ends at an airport, so flying in and out is simple: Chicago O'Hare and Springfield, Missouri; Tulsa and Amarillo; Albuquerque both ways; Albuquerque and Las Vegas; Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The pace is gentler than on the full route, with three to four hours of driving on most days and more time in each town.
Sections suit first-timers who want a taste, guests who have driven part of the road before and want to fill a gap, and anyone who would rather spend a long afternoon in a small museum than make miles. Several guests have now completed the whole road with us in four or five trips.
Southwest sections also run in November and March, when New Mexico, Arizona and California are mild and quiet. The Midwest and Plains sections run from April to October, and the Mojave section also runs in December and February.
A section is also the easiest way to test whether a longer trip suits you. Guests who start with New Mexico or Oklahoma often come back for the whole road, and the deposit, cancellation terms and early booking saving are the same as on every other multi-day trip.

4 questions
Route 66 section trips: your questions answered
Do the sections connect exactly?
Almost. The Illinois and Missouri trip ends in Springfield, Missouri, and the Oklahoma and Texas trip picks up the road at the Kansas line, so only the 70 miles between Springfield and Joplin are not on a section trip. They are on the full route trips.
Which section is best for a first trip?
Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle or New Mexico. Both have a lot of classic Route 66 in a small area: neon, diners, giant roadside sculptures and well-kept museums.
Can I add nights before or after?
Yes, at the start or end city. We book the same hotel as the group if it has rooms and can arrange airport transfers.
Are section trips cheaper per day than the full route?
Slightly more per day, because the first and last days are airport days. They are a good way to spread the cost over two or three years.
