Full route journeys
A full route trip is the one people dream about for years. You start on a Saturday morning in Chicago with pancakes at Lou Mitchell's, and two weeks later you watch the sun go down over the Pacific from the end of Santa Monica Pier. In between you cross the corn of central Illinois, the Ozark hills, a 13-mile corner of Kansas, the whole width of Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, the mesas of New Mexico, the Arizona high desert and the Mojave.
We run three versions. The 15-day trip goes by small coach with a road captain and a professional driver, and adds a full day at the Grand Canyon. The 14-day convertible trip puts two guests in each restored 1960s car, with a mechanic following in a chase truck. The 14-day motorcycle trip is for licensed riders on Harley-Davidson touring bikes, with a support van carrying the bags.
Daily driving averages four to five hours, with longer days across the empty stretches of Texas and the Mojave and short ones in the towns that deserve time, such as Tulsa, Santa Fe and Williams. We stay on the old two-lane alignments wherever they survive, including the brick road near Auburn in Illinois and the narrow Ribbon Road in Oklahoma, and use the interstate only where Route 66 lies under it.
Nights are split between restored motels with working neon, such as the Wagon Wheel in Cuba and the Blue Swallow in Tucumcari, and comfortable hotels in the cities. Departures run in spring and early autumn, when the desert is warm rather than hot and the Midwest is green or turning gold.
Per person sharing a double room. Optional flights to the start and home from the end are priced on each trip.

Four to five on an average day, including short stops. The longest days, across the Texas Panhandle and the Mojave, run to six or seven hours with lunch and photo stops. Two days have almost no driving: Santa Fe and the Grand Canyon on the coach trip.
Yes. Our section trips join up: Illinois and Missouri, then Oklahoma and Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Many guests drive half one spring and the other half the next year.
Wherever it survives and is paved, yes, which is about 85 percent of the route. In parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona old 66 lies under I-40, and there we use the interstate between towns and leave it at every exit that matters.
Late April to early June, or September to mid October. Both avoid the worst of the summer heat in the Mojave and the winter weather in the Midwest and on the high plateau around Flagstaff.
