Website and trips
Accessibility statement
We want everyone to be able to plan a Route 66 trip on this site. We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA and check the site with a keyboard, a screen reader and at 200 percent zoom.

What we built in
- One clear heading structure on every page, landmarks for header, navigation, main content and footer, and a "Skip to content" link.
- Every menu, filter and drop-down list opens and closes with the keyboard (Enter, Space, the arrow keys and Escape) and shows a visible focus ring.
- Drop-down lists announce their state to screen readers, and on phones they open as a full-width sheet with a close button.
- Text and buttons meet AA color contrast on cream, white and navy backgrounds.
- Photos have written descriptions of what they show; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- The home page photo slideshow can be paused and does not run if your device is set to reduce motion.
- Pages reflow to a single column on small screens and at high zoom, without sideways scrolling.
- Departure tables have proper headers, and trip prices are written as text, not images.
Known gaps
- The route maps come from an outside map service and are hard to use with a screen reader. Every stop on a map is also listed in the text of the page, with the day it is visited.
- Contact works by email. The email buttons need an email app; every address is also written out in plain text so you can copy it.
- Some photo credit titles come from Wikimedia Commons as their authors wrote them.
Access on the road
Coaches have steps at the door, and some historic motels have rooms only on upper floors or with narrow bathrooms. Tell us about mobility, hearing or sight needs when you enquire. We will say honestly which trips work, book ground-floor rooms where they exist and brief your road captain. Service animals are welcome on coach trips; please tell us in advance so we can let the motels know.
Report a problem
If something on this site does not work for you, email [email protected] with the subject "Accessibility", the page address and what happened. We reply within two working days and can send any page content by email in the meantime.
How we check
This statement was reviewed on October 20, 2026, after a full check of every page with keyboard only, a screen reader, automated tests and phone screens down to 360 pixels wide. We check again after every larger change to the site.
